Lazy Brunch at La Belle, Constantia

A friend recently celebrated his birthday (Happy birthday to you!) and decided, last minute, to have a birthday brunch. He asked me for suggestions with a set of criteria: 1) Location- southern suburbs, preferably the Constantia area; 2) Outdoors- he wanted it to be under the trees;  3) Not overly expensive & 4) Can accommodate a relatively big group.

I don’t frequent the Constantia area other than on the rare occasions that I actually go to gym there, so I was pretty stumped. There are some stunning places in the region though. Some are pretty expensive, such as The Green House and The Steenberg Estate restaurants, but really beautiful nonetheless.

So, with my handy friend, Google, I stumbled upon La Belle at The Alphen. The hubby had recently been to the Camps Bay branch for a work meeting and seemed to enjoy it, so we figured we would give it a try.

La Belle Bistro and Bakery, The Alphen

The location at the recently renovated Alphen Hotel is great. The deli is surrounded by lush, greenery. The hotel grounds itself is gorgeous. It is the perfect venue for a relaxed breakfast especially dining under the huge oaks.

The Restaurant

La Belle has a rustic yet contemporary decor with large mirrors and chalk-board menus giving it a homely feel. They pride themselves on their freshly baked goods which indeed looked delightful.

The staff were all friendly but service was particularly slow. I was on my second coffee before they took food orders. To their defense, we were 20+ people.

The Food

The breakfast menu was far from extensive and the options weren’t particularly cheap. I had flapjacks which were delicious. They tasted fresh- crisp on the outside and light on the inside. Three flapjacks will set you back R60. Everyone was happy with their meals and every dish was beautifully presented.

Have a look at some of the other breakfast options:

Fresh fruit platter

Fresh fruit platter- Overpriced at R65

Three cheese omlette

Three cheese omelette- R70

The Verdict

I loved the relaxed atmosphere and the venue is perfect. The food was fresh, wholesome and portions were relatively generous. The only negative is the price (3 out of 4 ain’t bad). I will definitely be back to try some of their yummy looking cakes.

    • Especially in the Constantia area but I think you are paying more for the location and ambience than the food itself. I was recently at Tashas in Constantia and they are also pricey but the portions are huge, it almost makes you forget the price. Thanks for the comment 🙂
