We arrived at 8am at Siem Reap airport. We were tired from our very early flight and couldn’t wait to reach the hotel. We were greeted by a very friendly driver from the hotel. He greeted us warmly and gave us cool towels. As he drove, he told us about the town and gave us a little tour. We were worried that we would only be able to check in at 3pm which is the normal check in time but he made a call and informed us that our room was waiting for us. We were delighted!
We were greeted by Hap Sablay, our hostess, who referred to herself as our “personal assistant”. She gave us a welcome drink and discussed our tours for the next few days. She showed us up to our rooms and they gave us a complimentary upgrade to a suite.
The room was large and comfortable. It had a a lounge area with a swinging day bed. The bathroom was spacious and had a free-standing bath and a well pressured shower. The bed was comfortable and the aircon worked perfectly. My only criticism of the room was that it had no natural light but that was great for afternoon naps (which we needed after the tours).
The television had about 100 different channels from several countries and the WIFI worked perfectly. I literally streamed the entire Thuli Madonsela Nkandla report with no problems (yes, odd thing to do on holiday I admit).
A complimentary tuk-tuk driver was included in our package and he took us around to the temples and if we wanted, to the market but we preferred to stroll to the market at night. The hotel is about a 15minute walk to pub street which seemed relatively safe.
Complimentary is the name of the game in this hotel. The mini bar was free, laundry was done daily, they brought us fruit every afternoon and a sweet treat every night so there was no added expenses with staying there.
The breakfast was okay. Limited variety for us as it was not halaal but there was muffins and scones and freshly squeezed juice. After leaving ParkRoyal in KL, our breakfast standards were pretty high. The dining hall was beautiful and they had a harmonium player every morning.
Never have I seen on Tripadvisor so many hotels in a town with such great ratings. Several hotels in Siem Reap have ratings of over 90%. It makes one rather skeptical that the reviews are fake. If you read into them you will discover that many of the reviews compliment the hotel’s hospitality. Memoire D’Angkor’s hospitality was second to none. Every staff member greets you warmly and asks you about your day. I absolutely fell in love with this hotel.
I would stay there again in a heartbeat. Its boutique in all the right ways. It’s not absolute luxury but for the price of around R500 per night, it is exceptional.
I highly recommend this hotel.
