New Year’s resolution 1 – To become more Healthy! So to start the new year off I decided to visit a well known little organic restaurant in the heart of Plumstead (bordering Constantia) called “Organic at Heart.” They offer a range of healthy, organic meals – from raw food to vegetarian, vegan, gluten and sugar free to free range meat and chicken dishes. They grow most of their own veggies, herbs and salads and source all ingredients ethically and organically. They cater for vegans, vegetarians, meat eaters and raw food enthusiasts.
Getting there is quite simple and easy. There is ample parking at the restaurant. There is a beautiful mosaic on the front of the house that reads “Organic at Heart”. You walk through the pathway and are surrounded by greenery. It feels very calming; there are tables and chairs outside as well as inside the restaurant. High ceilings, a fire place and old oak floors give the ambiance of calm and cosy.
We were welcomed by a young waitress who informed us of the buffet lunch special that was displayed inside the restaurant. We opted to go à la carte instead. ( For menu items try here)
We had the Chicken Mayo Salad (R68) which is described as the following on the menu: Slices of succulent free-range chicken, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, chives. Spinach, sweet peppers, carrots and lettuce with a delicious pesto dressing and a Spicy sun-dried Tomato wrap which is a wrap made from tomato with a spicy filling.
The salad looked very tasty and the chicken was juicy and succulent. But there was no pesto dressing. The food tasted fresh and crisp.
There are a number of healthy drinks, so we opted to try a juice called “GO Green: which was celery, wheat grass, spinach, apple and mint. The juice arrived in a jar which I thought was very rustic and original and it tasted fantastic. Really good.
For dessert I had to try the chocolate brownie with almond sauce. It satisfied my sweet craving, but for some reason it tasted very healthy. I don’t know if you ever tasted a “Bounty” chocolate? It tasted something like that, with an over powering taste of coconut. Very good.
The overall experience was calming, refreshing and made me feel very healthy. I had some time to walk around the restaurant and noticed there is a little shop that sells aromatherapy oils, candles, organic food items, etc.
Remember… you are what you eat. So don’t be fast, easy or fake. In the words of Hippocrates, “ Let food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be food”
